The North East Health Champions initiative, as part of Altogether Better and funded by BIG Lottery, was established in January 2014 with the aim of finding ways that citizens and services can work together in new and productive relationships. They have engaged and are supporting more than 130 volunteer health champions who work with staff in GP practices and in acute care settings to achieve better outcomes for patients and to create capacity to meet the increasing demand on services
To date eleven G.P. practices and one hospital setting have established practice/health champions within their health setting, supported by the project team based with Cumbria and North East Sub Region (formally Cumbria Northumberland Tyne & Wear Area Team). This work is currently established within Newcastle Hospitals, Northumberland CCG, Newcastle Gateshead Alliance CCG and South Tyneside CCG. In the near future they will also be working with Northumberland, Tyne & Wear NHS Foundation Trust.
The role of the Health Champions Team in NHSE is to find and support great champions, work with practices/services and support the new and growing relationship between champions and practices/services.
They aim to increase the support they currently offer and are seeking to commission additional support for the project until 31st May 2015 to help them achieve better outcomes for settings and champions. An individual with a real passion for this area of work and the skills to build meaningful relationships with citizens and services will find this role an excellent opportunity to contribute to the ambition to unlock the potential within communities to improve health and wellbeing.
